Description
Obsidian forms when lava cools rapidly into a glass-like substance. Historically used for sharp tools, it symbolizes the human desire to capture fleeting beauty. Sola Cubes by Usage No Nedoko in Kyoto reflect this idea, encasing real leaves, seeds, or flowers in crystal-clear acrylic resin. Each piece is handmade, offering a unique, meditative glimpse into nature’s ephemeral beauty. Inspired by Shiro Kuramata’s philosophy that ‘enchantment should also be considered as function,’ these cubes celebrate traditional Japanese values and the overlooked elements of nature.

I bought this Sola Cube as a gift, and it’s stunning. The obsidian cube contains a real leaf perfectly preserved in acrylic. It’s small but heavy, about 4cm on each side. The craftsmanship is excellent – very polished and smooth. Displaying it on my desk brings a calming, natural element to my workspace. While pricey at $57, the quality and uniqueness make it worthwhile. Reminds me of those intense raiders vs broncos games – a moment frozen in time.
